New and refurbished chalets and cottages

Regular guests at Tongariro Lodge will notice a few changes – all for the better! A number of three bedroom cottages and all of the chalets have undergone major refurbishment. An additional two level home with magnificent river and mountain views has just been completed, adding another level of superior accommodation for our guests.

New hosts, general managers

Our new hosts have settled into their role as general managers like 'fish to water'. Wayne and Mandy Enoka are doing a fantastic job, and with the expertise and experience in the hospitality industry that they bring to Tongariro Lodge we have a truly professional and friendly team steering the ship. Both Wayne and Mandy are showing true potential with the fly rod also, and have fallen for the sport.

Fishing report by head guide Tim McCarthy, 2004 – 2005 season

Well, what a great season it was in 04–05. Things were the total opposite of the previous season, with normal weather and stream conditions returning to us, thankfully. As a result, the whole of New Zealand experienced good trout fishing in general, with the Central North Island being exceptional. The dry fly fishing last summer was at its best since the great seasons of the late 90s.

The question on everybody's mind is what will next season bring. At this stage everything looks good. There is excellent nymph life present in all our rivers. The browns would have successfully spawned by now and the rainbows are well under way.

I have a beech tree in my front yard and it has had a good seeding year. There may be some mice around in the coming season. We are due for a mouse year as 1998 was the last one in the North Island. Look out for trophies this summer!
