Tongariro Lodge Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Tongariro Lodge — World Renowned
The Tongariro River and Lake Taupo trout fishery were first made famous in the 1920’s by Zane Gray, the world renowned American author and angler. The Queen Mother, Presidents and many famous people have since cast a line in this fabled river.
Tongariro Lodge was carved out of 22 acres of scrub land on the famous Tongariro River and initially comprised of just 8 chalets with a small main lodge building. Tony Hayes, founder and Shaun McCann, co-owner are immensely proud of the way Tongariro Lodge has grown over the years into one of the most well known fly fishing lodges in the world. This handsome lodge with its finely appointed chalets scattered over 22 acres of park like ground has created an excellent international reputation.
Tongariro Lodge has featured in major fishing and travel publications worldwide. These prestigious publications include The New Yorker, Conde Naste Traveller, Gourmet Magazine, New York Times, Esquire, Forbes FYI, Fly Fisherman, Fly Rod and Reel and Wild On The Fly. Over the years the lodge has been featured regularly on international travel and fishing shows.
