Recent Fly Fishing Media Coverage
Over the years, Tongariro Lodge has hosted the who’s who of world fly fishing and many famous people including Ernie Schwiebert, Lefty Kreh, Lani Waller, Randall Kauffman, Dave and Emily Whitlock, Barry and Kathy Beck, John Randolph, ex-presidents Jimmy Carter and Malcom Fraser, actors Liam Neeson, Robert Mitchum, Timothy Dalton to name a few.
The lodge has also enjoyed major exposure on fishing shows in New Zealand, Australia and the USA.
Over the last 6 months we hosted Ross Purnell, the editor of the USA publication Fly Fisherman, and the lodge is featured in the article “North Island Nirvana” in the current issue. We have also just hosted Micah Adams and Rene Vaz. Micah is the host and executive producer of the Australian Adventure Angler series, whose fishing show will feature on Australian television. John Deitch, who was in charge of the fly fishing footage shown in the Robert Redford movie “A River Runs Through It”, also stayed at the lodge and produced a fishing and hunting feature for the USA outdoor channel.
Summer Fishing Forecast Looking Great.
With a further increase in the abundance of smelt in Lake Taupo, the average size of rainbow trout entering the Tongariro River and Lake Taupo Tributaries has increased again this year. Later than normal spawning runs are forecast into early November and an early and mild spring is forecast. This all bodes well for excellent spring and summer, wilderness fly fishing out of the lodge. Let’s hope we get another good cicada hatch this summer.
