Trout Fishing Forecast, Tongariro Lodge, New Zealand
As you read this news, the rainbows are running in large numbers from Lake Taupo into the Tongariro and nearby rivers and great fly fishing action is being had for fresh run, bright silver fish, mainly in the 3-6lb bracket. These runs are getting later and later each year and are peaking September to November.
For anglers in the know, a favourite time to fly fish our area can be October until December. Large numbers of lake-run fish are in all the local rivers, and October marks the start of the season for our back country wilderness fly fishing, which anglers from all over the world come to enjoy. Last year, Tongariro Lodge anglers fished in over thirty different rivers and four lakes from the Lodge either by four wheel drive, raft, helicopter or boat. Great sport is experienced stalking large rainbows and browns in gin-clear rivers and streams. These fish are hungry in the spring and there has been no angling pressure on the water since the season closed five months earlier. The prospects for our popular summer dry fly and cicada hatches from January to April are looking excellent.
